Lately I’ve been listening to the music of beings that haven’t learned to talk yet: the new moon, my infant daughter, feral cats. More of my time is spent thinking or singing than it used to be. I was a doer and a player; many instruments mine. Now what is an instrument? I have done and I have played. Written songs, recorded albums, sung anthems, hawked wares, traveled the crumbling roads. Now it seems I am the jingle. I don’t have time to careen. I am paying lusty attention to a profound invigoration. I am age, presence, priorities. One priority is a third solo album, in the works, with pianos and hands. In the meantime, with my mate and baby I do percolate. Mornings twinkle gradually in. Thank you for these and other sounds.

Cynthia's third solo album, produced by Dusty.
My first album (The Sophie Drinker Record) was written with an electric guitar and a loop pedal, in between Brooklyn subways. My second (Homemade Map) was written on acoustic guitar in bedroom fashion on four track cassette and recorded in Manila CA in a beach shack. For my third album (In a Lab), I challenged myself to write a whole record on piano, because the process was foreign to me. A piano: the beach shack came with one, and Dusty and I moved it up to Portland late in 2005. We were celebrating Homemade Map and Here Comes Rocketship and Idle Idol. I wrote songs and looked for work. Laid down the basic tracks on Halloween weekend, 2006. Four years and a house and a baby later, here it is, with its wild variety of sounds. Organs and drums and beats and samples and flutes and harmonies and bass, all transforming those original piano notes.
